Three Paths to Happiness: Pleasure, Engagement, and Meaningful Living
Embracing the Foundations of Authentic Happiness
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." - Albert Schweitzer
In his groundbreaking book "Authentic Happiness," renowned psychologist Martin Seligman introduced three distinct paths to living a happy and fulfilling life - a life of pleasure, a life of vital engagement, and a life of meaning and purpose. This video provides a brief overview!
In this post, I’ll introduce you to each of these paths to happiness, and I encourage you to reflect on how you see each of these pathways unfolding in your past, present, and future. As you read, you might reflect on which of the three pathways resonates with you the most, and why? Is there one that you feel you are already incorporating into your life, or do you see potential in embracing aspects of all three? Please share your reflections and thoughts with people in your life over a meal, at a community event, or by engaging with them online to spark their curiosity!
The Pleasant Life
Imagine a life filled with laughter, joy, and happiness—a life where every day is like a beautiful melody that fills your heart with warmth. This is the pleasant life. The pleasant life is about savoring the sweet moments and seeking out all the things that bring you joy. Whether it's spending time with loved ones, enjoying your favorite hobbies, or simply indulging in the small pleasures of life, the pleasant life is about embracing positivity and basking in the simple pleasures that make life wonderful.
Embrace the art of living fully, for time waits for no one. Cherish the laughter of loved ones, the serenity of nature, and the magic in everyday moments.
Reflection activity: Think about a recent moment when you experienced laughter, joy, and lightheartedness. How did that moment uplift your mood and outlook? What activities or interactions can you seek out to infuse more laughter and joy into your week?
The Engaged Life
Have you ever been so immersed in an activity that time seemed to stand still, and you were completely lost in the moment? That's the engaged life. Living an engaged life is about finding your passion ~ the things that make you come alive ~ and pursuing them with all your mind, heart, and time. Whether it's playing a musical instrument, painting, playing sports, solving problems, or learning new things, the engaged life is about losing yourself in the flow of meaningful activities that bring you a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Lose yourself in what you love to do and you’ll learn more about yourself than ever before.
Reflection activity: What activities or interests have you set aside due to a lack of time or other priorities? How can you rekindle your passion for these activities and make time for them in your life?
The Meaningful Life
Picture a life where every action you take, no matter how small, makes a positive impact on your life and the lives of others—this life is one full of love, compassion, and purpose. This is what’s known as the meaningful life. The meaningful life is about finding your place in the world and making a difference by applying your strengths and values where they’re needed most. Whether it's volunteering to help those in need, finding your calling, standing up for what you believe in, or simply being there for a friend in times of need, the meaningful life is about connecting with others and leaving a lasting legacy of kindness and compassion.
A meaningful life is characterized by a deep sense of fulfillment, connection, and purpose. Find significance in your actions and contributions to others to fill your life with meaning.
Reflection activity: Which people, causes, or issues are close to your heart, and how are you making a positive impact in these areas? Consider how you can become more actively involved in these areas and how you can contribute to positive changes in your home and community life.
