Give Blood. Give Hope.
Today I did something good. I was on campus this morning for class and work when I stumbled upon an on-campus blood donation drive sponsored by the American Red Cross and CGU’s School of Community and Global Health. I had just gotten out of class and was working on a group project when I looked to the other side of the room and noticed a blood donation drive taking place. Class got out early and I had a bit of time so I thought
“why the hell not, I’ve got some time”.
So I finished my meeting and walked over to the sign up table to start getting processed to give. It took a bit of time out of my day but I didn’t mind making use of my mid-day break in a meaningful way.
My thought going up to the event was that I would be doing something good in a way that I had previously, but often don’t think about. Often, it takes an event happening right in front of me to take action in this way. I think that’s often how it happens in many people's lives. Reflecting later, it occurred to me that when good things happen around you, it makes you want to be good.
Science Bite: There’s a fun science behind this effect, called moral elevation. Essentially, moral elevation is a feeling of heightened moral inspiration or upliftment that we experience when witnessing acts of extraordinary kindness, altruism, or virtue in others. It's that warm, positive feeling we get when we see someone selflessly helping others or acting in a profoundly good way. It often evokes a sense of admiration, restores our faith in humanity, and can motivate us to engage in similar acts of kindness and goodness ourselves. In simple terms, it's the feeling of being inspired by the goodness in others to be a better person ourselves.
As I laid on the table I thought about what this action meant to me and others. For me, I felt a responsibility to give if I could. An age-old proverb suggests that when possible, contribute your treasures (financial support); if that's not feasible, offer your time; and if even that is limited, extend your thoughts and prayers. I think this blood drive experience showcases that there is even more you can give. If anything, I thought this story would be something uplifting to share with those in our community and I hope it inspires you to explore ways where you can make a positive impact on someone’s life today.
Once I finished up with the donation, they gave me an American Red Cross T-shirt that says across the front ~ Give Blood. Give Hope ~ below you will see me cheesing in it.
I hope this short message was a positive story that showcases the simplicity and ordinary aspects of giving hope and purpose through acts of service. I hope you reflect on the little things you can do going into this weekend to leave a positive impact on those around you and in your greater community.
A small moment of your time can mean a lifetime for someone else
